We were invited to Kennedey Space Center to cover their new crew module (that will replace the space shuttle) while it was on display there for a week preceding the final space shuttle launch. We were presented with a few unique challenges. To start, the crew module was 16 feet high while on a trailer and 6 feet wide at the tallest point. The module remained on the trailer during the display and had to be backed in to the tent.
The second challenge was the timing...to start, we agreed to do the tent on Saturday afternoon about 4pm. Setup needed to begin at 7pm Monday. Since the display was going in the popular "Rocket Garden" in the Visitors Center, we were not allowed to work during the parks business hours. We had to assemble most of the tent after hours Monday night. Tuesday morning at 6am the crew module began to back in and was in place by 7am. We were expected to finish the tent before the park opened at 9am.
By 9am, we had become sweaty tourists!!!!
The completed tent was 40 x 70 with windowed sidewalls. The walls were easily opened by the customer during display hours. They were easily closed during bad weather and overnight.
By 10 am our crew was qualified to fly the shuttle...well, we're good, but not that good. Pictured below Jeff, Kerwin and Nick.
